Welcome to School Streets: 2025
School Streets are transforming the school run. As demand for these schemes continue to rise Active Travel England and the Department for Transport have released new guidance to help councils deliver effective School Street programmes.
This third annual event, hosted by Lambeth Council, brings together more than 200 delegates to discuss the growing movement of School Streets and explore how local authorities can harness the power of these initiatives to benefit students, communities, and the environment.
With over 180 School Streets funded through the Government’s Active Travel Fund and more on the horizon, research shows significant benefits: increased active travel, community support, and minimal disruption to local traffic. This event will present the latest evidence, insights, and practical advice for those embarking on their own School Street projects.
The day before the conference, Lambeth Council supported by their key contractor Meristem Design will host an exclusive Healthy Neighbourhood and School Streets Tour, showcasing borough-wide Rain Gardens and the innovative St Mark’s School Street scheme in Kennington. Following the tour, attendees can enjoy a relaxed networking social at a local pub. Spaces for the tour are for local authorities and are limited, they will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, secure your spot early!

Research by the Road Safety Trust shows that School Streets increase active travel on the school run, are supported by most parents and residents in the nearby community, and do not cause significant road safety issues through traffic displacement.
Research by Active Travel England found that 85% of people in England support active travel and would like to do more, while data from charity Sustrans has previously found that four out of five children want to walk or cycle to school.
